Computer Assisted Reading
What is it and what does the research say?
Computer programs are interactive and can illustrate a concept through attractive animation, sound, and demonstration. They allow students to progress at their own pace and work individually or problem solve in a group. Computers provide immediate feedback, letting students know whether their answer is correct.
A preliminary study shows all participating students increased their fluency and comprehension when using CAI. Additionally, students improved their oral reading fluency and reading rate” (Gibson, Cartledge, & Keyes, 2011). “The use of CAIs with children who are both significantly inattentive and poor early readers may be an effective solution to prevent these children from falling significantly behind academically in comparison with their peers” (Walcott, Marett, & Hessel, 2014). |
Examples of CAI and Possible Uses
Photos showing computer assisted reading are shown above and below. These programs are often accompanied with headphones and microphones so they can both hear and speak the phrases they see on the screen. This type of strategy is used quite a bit in ESL/ELL reading classrooms.
Video Examples of CAI
This video is an informational video on how computer assisted reading can improve fluency. It goes in depth about the software and techniques that help students learn.
