Tape Assisted Reading
What is it and what does the research say?
"Tape assisted reading is an individual or group reading activity where students read along in their books as they hear a fluent reader read the book on an audiotape. As confidence and reading skills develop, students read the same passage or text without the assistance of the tape" (Reading Rockets Inc., 2014).

Examples of Tape Assisted Reading and Possible Uses
Two photos showing students reading a book with the aid of a recording. These students are following along the text as it is read to them. This helps teach them fluency as they can identify natural pauses and breaks.
Many books come with an audio companion for this very reason. Consider checking with your local library for pairing of books and their audio companion.

Video Examples of Tape Assisted Reading
The first video on the left shows an instructor and student listening to an audio recording of a book while the student follows along and reads the book. This aid assists students with learning fluency. They can hear difficult vocabulary, and with an instructor near by, they can get assistance as needed.
The second video is an informational video about using audio assisted reading in your classroom. The large downside to using this strategy is the technological requirement. If you're not familiar with or comfortable with new software, it may be difficult to implement in your classroom.
